Index your Claude export in ModelBrain

A Claude export arrives as several zip files, and the one that matters can hold a single conversations file of hundreds of megabytes. The claude-export source reads that file as a stream, one conversation at a time, so memory use stays small, and indexes each conversation as one memory in a partition of its own. It follows the visible reply chain. Available from ModelBrain 0.6.6.

Before you start
Add it
  1. Open the ModelBrain menu, choose Vaults, then Add Source, then Claude export….
  2. A prompt asks whether your export is a zip file. Choose Yes to pick the zip. Choose No to pick the folder.
  3. ModelBrain indexes it in the background. A large export takes a while.

From a terminal, connector_sync register <id> <path> --type claude-export does the same. For example: connector_sync register claude ~/Downloads/conversations-000.zip --type claude-export.

What it skips
Limits and safety

A container file over 4 GiB is refused and recorded as a failure, not dropped. Set MODELBRAIN_CONTAINER_MAX_BYTES to change that ceiling. A single conversation over 32 MiB is refused the same way, and the rest of the export carries on.

While it indexes, ModelBrain writes the conversation text to a private temporary file, then deletes it when the work is done. Allow a few hundred megabytes of free disk space for a large export. If the export cannot be read to the end, every conversation already indexed stays put until the next good pass.

This source is hidden from relay callers. Anything that reaches ModelBrain through the hosted relay, which is how ChatGPT and Grok connect, cannot see what this source imported unless you add its partition (and the partition of any other source of the same kind) to that connection's allowlist yourself. Your chat history is the most personal thing in this list, so check the partition before you share a ModelBrain store with anyone.

Check that it works
  1. Ask your assistant to run ModelBrain diagnostics. The source reports its kind, members, members_failed and last_container_bytes.
  2. Ask a local assistant about something you once discussed with Claude.
If something does not work

The source reports a failure and indexed nothing

The zip held no conversations.json, or the file was cut off or not valid JSON. Download the export again and pick conversations-000.zip.

A conversation is missing

It may have had no dialogue text, or it was over 32 MiB and was recorded as a failed member. Check the counts in diagnostics.

Questions

How do I add my Claude export to ModelBrain?

Open the ModelBrain menu, choose Vaults, then Add Source, then Claude export. Say whether you have the zip or the folder, then pick it. Available from ModelBrain 0.6.6.

Will a 450 MB export fill my memory?

No. The file is read as a stream, one conversation at a time, so memory use stays near the size of one conversation.

Does ModelBrain read my Claude projects and memories?

No. This source reads only the conversations file. The other zips in the export are never opened.

Can ChatGPT or Grok read this partition?

No. The partition is hidden from relay callers, which is how ChatGPT and Grok connect.
