Getting started

Do I need to be technical to use this?

No. Setup is one install command and one entry in your assistant's settings. After that you talk to your assistant normally — "remember this", "what did we decide?", "forget that". There's nothing to configure and no query language to learn.

Which assistants does it work with?

Anything that supports MCP, the open standard for connecting tools to assistants. Today that includes Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor, with the list growing. It won't work with an assistant that has no MCP support.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no sign-up, no password and no licence key. An account only comes into existence if you later subscribe to something that involves our servers.

When can I actually use it?

There's no date. It ships when it passes its own recall test, and we'd rather be late than publish a memory tool that quietly gets things wrong. Early access gets you one email when it's installable.

Your data

Where exactly are my memories stored?

In a folder you choose on your own computer. You can move it, copy it or delete it like any other folder. If you delete it, it's gone — there's no copy anywhere else unless you set one up.

Is my data used to train AI models?

No. Not on any tier, not in aggregate, not anonymised. Separately, remember that your assistant is a different company with its own terms — we control what's on your disk, not what Claude or Cursor does with a memory once it's in the conversation.

Can you read my memories?

Local use: no, we have nothing. Managed backup: no, it's encrypted before it leaves your machine and we don't hold the key. Server/team tier: technically yes, because a server has to be able to search what it stores. The three modes, in detail.

Is the vault encrypted?

Not by ModelBrain, and the security statement explains why. Turn on FileVault, BitLocker or LUKS — your operating system already does this well, for free.

Trusting it

What if it remembers something wrong?

Every recalled memory comes back with its date and where it came from, so you can check it rather than take its word. Correct it by telling your assistant the new version; the old one becomes history rather than a competing answer.

If I delete something, is it really gone?

Yes, and that's a pass/fail line in our own test rather than a promise in marketing copy. "Forget that" either undoes a correction or removes a whole document. Nothing comes back on its own.

Will it decide on its own what to remember?

Your assistant asks it to save things, so in practice some of that is the assistant's judgement. What ModelBrain guarantees is that nothing is hidden: everything stored can be listed, checked and deleted by you, and nothing it stores can mark itself private or claim a source it doesn't have.

What if two memories contradict each other?

It won't spot that by itself — we've deliberately not claimed otherwise. You tell it which is current, and the other becomes history you can still look at.

Practical

What does it cost?

Nothing, for everything on your own computers, permanently. You pay only for things involving someone else's machine: syncing between devices, backup we manage, or a shared team collection. Pricing.

Will it slow my computer down?

Day to day it's idle between requests. The honest exception is the first read of a large folder of documents, which uses real CPU for a while because it processes everything locally instead of sending it away.

What happens if my laptop dies?

Whatever your backup habits allow. Your vault is ordinary files, so Time Machine, File History or any backup tool you already run covers it. If you'd rather not think about it, managed backup keeps encrypted restore points for $4 a month and restores to a new machine in one command.

Can I get my memories out?

Yes — export is a documented command, and the folder is yours regardless. We'd rather you could leave easily than rely on it being hard.
