Docs / Your account
ModelBrain works fully on one computer with no account. An account adds three things: your memories kept in step across your computers, managed encrypted backups, and connecting ChatGPT. This page covers how each one works, what it costs, and how to cancel or leave.
Removing a computer (from the Account window on another one) stops it syncing and changes the vault key, so it can't read anything new.
Your memories, forgets and partitions sync between your computers within a few minutes, encrypted on your computer before they leave it. Two things never leave the computer they are on: content read from your folders (each computer reads its own folders) and any partition you mark as local-only. Each computer keeps its own complete copy, so ModelBrain keeps working offline and while our servers are down.
Managed backup comes with sync. Our servers keep daily backups for 30 days, weekly for 12 weeks and monthly for 12 months, plus one before each ModelBrain update and any you take yourself. Each one is checked for completeness, and once a week your computer opens the newest one and counts what is in it, which is the only step that needs your key.
To restore, open Account…, find the backup under Backups and choose Restore. It is restored into a new folder in Documents/ModelBrain/Restores, and your current memories are not changed. Export encrypted copy saves everything you have synced to a folder you keep; your vault key or recovery phrase opens it.
Connecting ChatGPT goes through ModelBrain's relay and is free: any account can use it, with or without a plan. The steps are in ModelBrain and ChatGPT. Each connection is tied to one computer, and works only after you choose Allow for it in the Account window on that computer. The Account window and your account page list the apps connected, how many calls each made today, and a Disconnect button. The relay keeps counts only, never what was asked or answered.
Sync is $6 per computer per month billed yearly, or $8 billed monthly, and $4 per computer a month past 25 on either plan ($48 a year on the yearly plan). Storage for your backups and synced data is $0.05 per GB per month, measured on what is actually stored. Prices are on the pricing page. Subscribe from the Account window or modelbrain.net/account; card details and invoices are handled by Stripe and reached from Card and invoices.
If a payment fails, everything keeps working for 14 days while you update your card.
Choose Cancel subscription in the Account window or on your account page. It stops the renewal; nothing changes until the end of the period you paid for, and there is no refund for the rest of it. We email you the date.
Choose Delete my account on your account page. If a computer is still signed in, do it from that computer's Account window instead; this stops anyone with only access to your email from deleting your account. Renewal stops at once. Everything we store for the account (encrypted data, backups, computers, billing records we don't have to keep) is erased 14 days later, and we email you a receipt. Until then, Keep my account undoes it. Your local memories are never affected.
Your account page lists sign-ins, computers added and removed, key changes, backups and restores, billing changes and app calls for the last 400 days, and downloads them as a CSV. It never shows or stores the content of your memories.
No. Everything on one computer works without an account, permanently. An account is only for syncing between your computers, managed backup, and connecting ChatGPT.
No. Your computers encrypt everything before it is uploaded, with a vault key that only your computers and your recovery phrase hold. Our servers store and check the encrypted data but cannot decrypt it.
It stops renewing. Everything keeps working until the end of the period you paid for, then your synced data is read-only for 30 days, then deleted. The memories on your computers are never touched.
Yes, with your 24-word recovery phrase: install ModelBrain, sign in, and type the phrase when it asks you to approve the new computer. Without the phrase, nobody can decrypt your synced data, including us.
To share a partition with other people, start or join an organization. It never gives anyone access to your personal memories. See Teams.
