Our own proposal: count your copies before you trust a delete. ChatGPT removes a deleted chat from your account view at once and schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, but that does not reach a saved file, a memory or an export you already downloaded. Our own export is 1,463 conversations in 916 MB, and no delete in ChatGPT can touch it.
On the web or desktop app, open your chat history, select the more options menu (the three dots) next to the chat, choose Delete and confirm. On iOS or Android, open the menu, press and hold the conversation title, then choose Delete. According to OpenAI's delete and archive page, checked November 4, 2026, deleting is permanent and a deleted chat cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support.
Open Settings, choose Data controls, then choose Delete all chats and review the confirmation. Clear and erase mean the same thing here, because ChatGPT has one bulk control. It can affect chats in your current account or workspace, including chats in projects, and it cannot be undone. Archive all chats sits beside it and does not delete anything: an archived chat leaves the sidebar, stays searchable and keeps the same retention.
The delete button works on one copy of a chat. Whether your conversation is gone depends on how many copies exist, and the same help pages describe each one. The table follows OpenAI's delete and archive page and its retention page.
| Copy | Does Delete reach it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The chat in your sidebar and search | Yes, immediately | Nothing more |
| OpenAI's systems | Scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless the chat was already de-identified or OpenAI must keep it longer for security or legal reasons | Allow up to 30 days |
| Files saved to Library or Space | No. A saved file is separate from the chat that used it | Delete the file there |
| Saved memories | Memories live in their own list under Settings, Personalization, Memory | Delete them separately and check |
| An export you already downloaded | No. It is a file on your disk, and nothing in ChatGPT can reach it | Delete the file yourself |
OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view at once and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Two exceptions apply to that window: a chat that was already de-identified and disassociated from your account, and anything OpenAI must retain longer for security or legal obligations. On a work or school workspace, authorized compliance tools may still reach eligible data under your organization's retention policy, so an admin can see more than a personal account does.
Per OpenAI's temporary chat page, a temporary chat stays out of your history and is not used to improve models while it remains temporary. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save it, it becomes a regular chat and follows the normal retention rules.
We downloaded our real ChatGPT export before writing this. It is a 916 MB set of files holding 1,463 conversations in fifteen numbered JSON files, and ModelBrain 0.6.6 indexed 1,462 of them into 152,760 chunks in 118 seconds. Deleting a chat in ChatGPT today changes none of that, because the export was a copy the moment it arrived. If you plan to delete everything but want a searchable archive, export first. Our guide to exporting ChatGPT conversations covers the files, and this one covers an export that fails to arrive.
Can I get a deleted chat back? No. OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through Support, including chats removed with Delete all chats.
Does deleting a chat delete files I uploaded? Not files saved separately to Library or Space. Delete those where they are saved.
Does deleting a chat remove data from an app it used? It removes the conversation and the connected-app data kept inside it from your account, but not the original data in the connected app.
