Can Claude read your Obsidian vault with Obsidian closed?

Yes. Claude can read an Obsidian vault with Obsidian closed when the tool reads the vault's folder directly. Tools built as Obsidian plugins, or that call a plugin's local API, need Obsidian open. Here is our own proposal for checking any tool in a minute, the closed-vault test: quit Obsidian, ask the assistant for a note, and if it answers, the tool reads files rather than the app.

The closed-vault test

  1. Quit Obsidian completely. Closing the window is not always enough. Check that it is not still running in the Dock or menu bar.
  2. Ask the assistant about a specific note. Pick one with a phrase you know is in it, for example "What does my note about the pricing page say?"
  3. Read the result. If the answer arrives, the tool reads the files. If you get an error or a timeout, the tool depends on the Obsidian app.
  4. Reopen Obsidian and repeat once, so you know the failure was the closed app and not a typo.

Which options pass, by their own documentation

Whether Obsidian must be open, by option. From each project's own page, checked October 14, 2026.

What we ran on October 14, 2026

On the morning of October 14, 2026, Obsidian was installed on the Mac we use for ModelBrain and was not running; the machine's app list showed it as not running. A ModelBrain recall from a connected folder still returned results, each with the path of the file it came from. ModelBrain was version 0.4.4.

The limits matter. That folder holds our own site files, not an Obsidian vault, so this shows that the folder reader does not need the Obsidian app, not how it handles a particular vault. For vault behavior, the Obsidian guide lists what is tested.

What this does not cover

This page is about Claude Desktop and Claude Code with a server on your own computer. Reading with Obsidian closed says nothing about whether a tool can change your notes; for that, see Obsidian MCP servers compared by what they can change. For the wider picture, including plugins that are not MCP servers, see Does Obsidian have AI?

Common questions

Does Claude need an Obsidian plugin to read my vault? Not always. A server that reads the vault folder directly, such as MCPVault, needs no plugin and works with Obsidian closed. Servers that call the Local REST API plugin, or run as plugins, need the plugin and Obsidian open.

Does Obsidian have to be open for an Obsidian MCP server? For servers built as Obsidian plugins, or that call a plugin's local API, yes. For servers that read the folder directly, no. The closed-vault test shows which kind a tool is.

How do I check whether a tool needs Obsidian open? Quit Obsidian, ask the assistant about a specific note, and see whether the answer arrives. If it does, the tool reads the files. If it errors or times out, it depends on the app.
